Looking for easy ways to save space in your dorm room? We’ve got you covered. We put together a list with some of our favorite ways to maximize your (let’s face it… tiny) dorm room space. We’ve included ideas, direct links to some of our favorite items, and helpful hints. Here are our 5 Easy Ways to Save Space in Your Dorm Room:
Folding. Folding is key. If you haven’t already jumped on the Marie Kondo – KonMari Method of Tidying Up bandwagon, you’re seriously missing out. I was a bit late to board this train (or should I say wagon?)… but boy did it feel great to tidy up and make more space – which we all know is few and/or between in dorm rooms. This particular way of folding frees up tons of space in your dorm dresser and allows you to see what you have in one glance. It’s also a great time to get rid of things that don’t “Spark Joy.” Here’s a peek of what my drawers looked like after I completed the folding challenge.
Under-Bed Storage. To us, this is the holy grail of surviving dorm room living. There is so much empty space under your lofted dorm bed, why not use it to your advantage? There are a few ways to do this. One way is to buy a curtain rod and attach it to the bed frame to create a “mini closet” under the bed. Storage bins are another great option. You can choose from rolling shoe storage bins, small storage bins, etc to utilize the space and keep organized. Don’t forget to hide your not so cute under-bed storage with an extended length dorm bed skirt.
Cubby Hole Storage. Cubby holes are back from your elementary school days and we’re diggin’ it! We love using cube storage in the closet in open space in your dorm, or under the bed. Cubby holes are perfect for storing extra shoes, school supplies and books, t-shirts, and beyond. Another fun idea is to put the cube storage piece on top of your desk and style it with your favorite desk and study essentials.
Door Storage. When we say use every square inch of space possible, we mean it. It’s important to not feel cramped and confined in your dorm room – but still have all your favorite belongings. These Door Storage Organizers are perfect for using space that would normally be forgotten. Of course, they can hold the expected shoes but let’s think outside the box. These would be perfect to store all your highlighters, pencils, pens, socks, under-garnets, etc.
Storage ottoman. Of course, we love the design aspect of storage ottomans. Find two of your favorite dorm accent chairs, bomb it with throw pillows, and add a fun rug and you have yourself the perfect dorm sitting area. One of our favorite things to do in a dorm room is to create a little sitting area where you feel motivated to complete school work or hang with the gals. A storage ottoman would be perfect in this area. Fill it with extra items you need to store for the ultimate two-fer : storage and style!
We can’t wait to see you get all Maria Kondo on us and stay organized, motivated, and ready to take on the world in college!
