Hey y’all! Megan here! As some of y’all know, I (finally) got engaged in April to my handsome beaux. We are so excited for this journey and all the fun festivities that come with it. Speaking of festivities… we threw a Mexican themed party and can’t wait to share the details with you!
Looking for Mexican themed party ideas?
So, the plan was to have the fiesta at our home. We (still) haven’t had a housewarming party and wanted to show our friends and family the beautiful home we have been working on… and of course all the amazing Decor 2 Ur Door bedding and decor. Our patio is a bright and colorful theme so it went along with our Bright + Colorful Fiesta Engagement Party perfectly. Because of the amount of people going, we decided to have soft seating in the back yard. The back yard is our favorite part of the house and also where Billy proposed.
Well, Florida weather put a little damper (literally DAMP) on our plans. There was a big storm brewing and the weather was looking horrible. The week of the party we decided to move it to my parents house about 5 minutes away. They have more room to offer for people inside and a bigger covered patio. Everything was already set up at our home so we took everything apart and took carloads and truckloads of decor and party items and started re-designing our party.
As you can tell, the McDonald girls love to design. Whether it is a room for Decor 2 Ur Door or a party, design is our passion and something we truly love. My fiancé thinks we are “over the top” and could make things way easier on ourselves… but hey… what’s the fun in that?!
The food was INCREDIBLE. I wouldn’t know because I didn’t have time to try any that night… but the leftovers were divine!! A long time friend of my fiance (also a fireman) is an amazing chef. He cooked up an amazing assortment of authentic Mexican tacos and toppings, Peruvian corn, homemade sauces, grilled corn with cojita cheese. The presentation was so beautiful I almost didn’t want anyone to dig in. Our friends and family raved about all the food – which is a SCORE!
Here are a few details and how to’s from our Mexican themed party that you can use for your next event.
Hand Dipped Silverware
We got plain white plastic flatware from the Dollar Store and an assortment of craft paint in bright colors. I hand painted the ends of each piece of flatware to add a bit of fun and color. To me, this was so much better than plain lime green silverware. It was as if a piñata exploded on the flatware. TOTALLY worth the DIY.
I found the bright fiesta color streamers at Party City. I measured out the length I would need and used a long piece of ribbon to attach the streamers to, I hot glued the streamers at the top and voila! This project was very easy but super time consuming. I don’t like too much perfection in things so I tried to mix up the colors so that they did not form a pattern. I also cut the streamer length long enough so that it draped nicely on the floor to create a luxe look – and also made sure I cut them at different lengths so that they were not all the same… adding a bit of dimension and flare.
My friend Stephanie and I did all the florals. Steph is an amazing event planner that I used to work with in the events field. We bought all the florals at our local Wholesale Florist and went to work. I love how organic the centerpieces were and how much color they brought to all the tables. To me, the florals made it. It took a fiesta party that has “been done” to something classy and beautiful. The table runners were made from fabric from a fabric vendor we use here at Decor 2 Ur Door. I cut them into strips and used the fabric to design the entire party around.
The succulents and plants were all ours. Billy and I are the crazy plant people. We adore cactus, succulents, and plants so we used our “babies” as part of the table decor to make it all come together. I love how the cactus and succulents are clumped together with the candles and small colored glass vases. It added a lot of drama and left space for the beautiful floral centerpieces to steal the show.
Stephanie also does Calligraphy so she was my girl for all the signage at the party. From the welcome sign to the chalkboard on the glass sliders to the food labels… it made everything tie together. I was totally obsessed with everything she did.
It’s all about the details. My mom even put cut up streamers in glasses in the kitchen cabinets so you could see color through the glass doors. I’m telling you… not a detail was forgotten.
I can’t believe how perfectly our Mexican themed party turned out. It was everything we could have ever dreamed of. Not a detail was missed. A few of my favorite DIYs were the dipped flatware, the streamer backdrop, the tassel garland for the jumbo balloons, and the florals. We did everything ourselves which made the final look so rewarding to see it come together. I am so thankful to my parents for throwing us our dream Mexican themed party and to our family and friends for talking time to celebrate with us. We are so blessed.
Cheers to the wedding!
