Happy Mother’s Day! We are blessed to celebrate this special day with our favorite mama-boss. As some of you know – D2D is a family company and I figured Mother’s Day was the perfect time to reflect on this biz and how we got to where we are now.

D2D Behind the Scene's: We Get It From Our Mama

Robin, the owner (and my mom) started the company 11 years ago. Mom came from a background in interior design and is truly one of the most talented people I know. She started this company after designing my older sisters dorm room in 2006 – everyone was in love. D2D started in the garage of our Florida home. My dad had been diagnosed with cancer and my mom needed an outlet to keep her mind positive. Dad is A-OK and look where we are now! Holy moly – WHERE in the heck did time go? The biz grew and flourished and changed in so many ways.

D2D Behind the Scene's: We Get It From Our Mama

I came along in 2014 after leaving a job in event planning and management. I have to say… I never thought I would end up working “for my mom.” I’ve always been the independent daughter who likes to do my own thing, is always busy, and tries to make my own path. God surely has His plan. When I left my job as catering manager and event planner… I knew my passion was in design. Whether it is decorating a room for an event or for a home or dorm… I have an eye for design and passion for making things creative, unique, and beautiful. I started helping mom with the biz in my downtime because D2D can get CRAY during dorm season. I realized how much I enjoyed designing, talking with customers, and being able to transform those drab cinderblock walls into something beautiful. My job started as helping ‘ma with designs, marketing and trying to get her creative mind to be somewhat organized. {wink, wink} Remember y’all, we are family. We can give each other a hard time every once in a while.

With that being said, I am so PROUD of what my mom has created. This business holds a lot of heart, love, laughter (and also lots of tears). We bring a lot of emotion and a lot of passion into the world of design. I have grown so much in this career. My role has evolved from simply helping mama out to becoming the main designer, marketing director, and being a huge component what makes this thing tick – and for that I am forever grateful.

D2D Behind the Scene's: We Get It From Our Mama

D2D Behind the Scene's: We Get It From Our MamaMy older and wiser sis joined us about 2 years ago, now. I like to think of her as the brains behind the operation. As I explained – sometimes it’s hard to get a designers mind on the business level. For instance… math. Have I mentioned I hate math? My sister came from the background of being a financial analyst of a corporate headquarters. She is beautiful and smart. Quite the combo if you ask me! I think Amanda was a little jelly that mom and I got to do “fun” stuff and work together all day errry-day. She decided to leave her job and join the D2D team. Amanda helps in her knowledge with marketing and handles the day-to-day shipping operations and more. As you can see… we all wear multiple hats around here but that’s how we make this thing roll! It has been such a blessing having my sis come on board! She even brings her foster baby and now her baby of her own to work to be a part of the D2D design process. I wasn’t lying when I said this is a family thing, y’all.

The family dynamic doesn’t end there. Dad is always a call (and short drive) away from fixing things at the D2D Headquarters. He is also the money man and handles some of the D2D accounting. A mother-daughter team, much like ourselves, Andy and Siggy are the main seamstresses that hand-make each and every custom order. They are extremely hard workers and work tirelessly through the night during season (with the rest of the team) to get orders out ┬áin time for our college girls! Larissa is our marketing and site genius that works tirelessly to make our site perfect. She is also a mom of two and it truly feels like she’s part of the family as well.

Each and every day is a challenge, but I have to say it is also a blessing. On the outside looking in, D2D may look like a huge chain store. While this is a compliment (because, hey – look how awesome!) we really pride ourselves on the fact that we are not that chain store. We are a mom and pop company that puts love and sweat into each and every order that goes out of our warehouse. This type of love is what has made D2D grow and thrive to become what it is today.

Thanks mom for creating this little bit of family, this little bit of fun, and this little bit of love. Amanda and I are forever grateful. Cheers to all the moms out there. Follow your dreams and love one another. I guess they were right all along… “mirror mirror on the wall, I am my mother after all.”
